Signs you have a problem

• A papery grey nest under the eaves, in a shed or inside a soffit
• Wasps streaming in and out of one point in the siding or ground
• Yellow jackets around a hole in the lawn or at the base of a wall
• Aggressive activity near a bin, grill or fruit tree in late summer
• A steady hum inside a wall, which often means an established bee colony

Why it happens

Yellow jacket colonies peak in late summer and get noticeably more aggressive as food runs short. A nest that seemed harmless in June is a different animal by September.

The part people underestimate

Knocking down a nest yourself is how most stings happen. Anyone in the household with an allergy makes this an urgent job rather than a weekend one.

Identify the species, remove what is inside, seal every way in, then clean up what was left behind. That last pair of steps is what separates a fix from a delay, and it is included in the quoted price rather than added afterwards.
