A Month-by-Month Pest and Wildlife Calendar for US Homes

Termite swarms in spring, wasps in August, rodents at the first frost. Knowing what comes next makes prevention cheap and emergencies rare.

Late winter into spring

Raccoons and squirrels start looking for den sites for their litters from around February, which is why attic noise complaints climb well before the weather turns. Ants become active as the ground warms. Termite swarms typically follow the first warm, still, humid days, and discarded wings on a window sill are often the only sign you will get.

Late spring into early summer

Wasp and hornet queens found new nests, and at this stage they are small and easy to deal with. Mosquito populations build wherever water has been standing. Bat maternity season begins, which means exclusion work has to wait until the pups can fly.

High summer

Mosquitoes peak. Yellow jacket colonies grow quickly. Roach activity climbs with the heat, particularly in multi-unit housing. This is also when dead animal calls spike, because anything that dies in a wall in July announces itself within a day or two.

Late summer into autumn

Yellow jackets get noticeably more aggressive as their food supply collapses, and this is when most stings happen. Spiders become more visible indoors. Rodents begin scouting for winter shelter well before the first frost, which makes early autumn the single best window for exclusion work.

Winter

Rodent activity moves indoors in earnest. Raccoons and squirrels that got into an attic in autumn are now settled in. Bed bug reports climb after the holiday travel season. Termites do not stop, they simply become harder to notice, which is why an annual inspection is worth booking regardless of the month.

Working ahead of it

Almost everything on this calendar is cheaper to prevent than to fix. Seal in autumn, inspect for termites annually, clear standing water in spring, and deal with small wasp nests in June rather than September. If you would rather put it on a schedule, ask about seasonal plans when you call (833) 652-6912.
